I don't call these pedestrian crossings / zebra crossings, but "Kill Zones". Anyone having tried to use the traffic lights in the way intended will know why:

I dont know how many times I have been nearly run down - I stand my ground and force them to stop. Mostly, I get apologises because drivers do just not see pedestrians - I just think they are so used to 'owning' the road that they are oblivious. We have a set of pedestrian lights nearby and it's the same - two in five will just drive through oblivious. I would love to see the police statistics on summons given for such an act - they will be zero and yet if you could get a cop out of his air-conditioned office of car, they would make a killing. But, they would probably shrug and say - why bother - pedestrians should get out of the way or they will get hurt. How old people cross the raod is beyond me.
